My recent adventure to Mexico for a friend’s milestone birthday celebration proved to be a profound experience, both personally and collectively among friends. This was my second venture into this vibrant country, with my first memory tracing back to a joyful trip with my younger sister to Cancun in the late 90s. Returning now, and particularly to Puerto Morelos, made the journey feel both familiar and exciting.
The heart of our trip revolved around the wonderful Okan Healing Retreat owned by husband and wife Phoebe and Hector. Over the course of a week, we engaged in a series of activities that deepened our bonds. One of the highlights was learning the traditional dance known as Danza de los Concheros, a spirited celebration that strengthened our connection to Mexican culture. Additionally, we participated in a ceremonial ritual called Nagur, which involved a sacred selection of herbs for yoni steaming. Sharing this experience in a circle was both empowering and enlightening.
Individual pursuits were equally rewarding; the opportunity to receive a personalized healing massage from the retreat’s skilled instructor was a cherished moment. A significant excursion led us to the iconic Chichen Itza, located a couple of hours away. This site had captivated me in my earlier visit when I climbed its majestic pyramid—now recognized as one of the seven wonders of the world. The drive there became a musical interlude, as we sang along to melodies crafted by our friend, enhancing the camaraderie we cherished.
Following our exploration of Chichen Itza, we took a detour to Valladolid for dinner. This charming town offered a wonderful ambience and an array of local crafts vendors and street performers. During my time in Chichen Itza and Valladolid, I purchased unique items from local artisans, including a stunning fire opal necklace, a traditional dream catcher crafted by an elderly woman, and a demon puppet for my husband.
Another engaging aspect of our adventure involved an organic farm-to-table tour. While the experience took a turn when I found myself feeling ill due to eating potent herbs on practically an empty stomach, the nurturing presence of my friends made all the difference, allowing me to recover and relish the remainder of the tour.
Our final night was capped with salsa and bachata dance lessons, where we danced freely among the locals. It was a testament to how far we had come together, and was a great way to end the trip together.
On a personal note, the trip turned profound for me. My friend, who was celebrating her milestone birthday, wanted everyone to take pictures in all white. A few photos stood out to me, fulfilling a vision that I had received during my first Reiki session ten years prior. During my Reiki session, the Reiki master told me that she saw me surrounded by women dressed in all white. This photo and moment solidified a sense of purpose for me; surrounded by women in white, I recognized this as a crossroads leading me into my own journey of healing.
Throughout the trip, the loving care we extended to one another created a nurturing atmosphere that made each moment reflect the essence of friendship and healing. It was a journey not only of discovery but also of the collective experience that shapes who we are meant to be.
